Owners buy bandwidth and hope for latency. They are not the same thing. A center with a fast line and a bad topology will feel worse than one with half the speed and a clean path — and players will tell everyone about it.

Bandwidth is for updates, latency is for gameplay

An online match uses a startlingly small amount of data. What ruins it is jitter and packet loss. Your bandwidth needs are driven almost entirely by game updates and downloads, which is why a patch day can make every match in the building feel terrible while your speed test still looks fine.

  • Cable everything. Wi-Fi for gaming stations is the most common self-inflicted latency problem in this industry. Wired connections for every PC, no exceptions; keep Wi-Fi for phones and the mobile bay.
  • Use a real switch. Consumer routers running thirty concurrent sessions become the bottleneck. A managed gigabit switch, and a router that can handle your session count, are foundational spend rather than upgrades.
  • Shape update traffic. Rate-limit downloads during peak hours or schedule them overnight. One PC pulling a 90 GB update at 8 PM should not be able to degrade the entire floor.

Know your route, not just your speed

Two ISPs advertising the same speed can give very different ping to the game servers your players actually use. Before signing a contract, test the route to those specific servers from the premises during evening hours. Ask about peering, and whether the connection is genuinely dedicated or shared with an entire building.

Have a second line

An outage during a Friday peak costs a night of revenue and a chunk of trust. A cheaper secondary connection from a different provider, with automatic failover, is one of the highest-value pieces of insurance in a center — and it doubles as your update pipe on patch days.

Measure continuously

Log ping and jitter to a fixed target from one station, all day, every day. When a player says "it felt laggy on Tuesday", you want data, not a shrug. Most latency problems are intermittent, and intermittent problems are invisible without a record.
